The UQ Ramsay Undergraduate Scholarship was established in 2019 with support from the Ramsay Centre for Western Civilisation. The purpose of the scholarship is to support students undertaking a sequence of study in Western Civilisation through one of two Approved Programs of Study – the Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Honours) (BAdvHum(Hons)) program or the dual Bachelor of Humanities/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (BHum/LLB(Hons)) program.

Value: $30,000 per year.

Applications must include a Curriculum Vitae (max. two pages), two references, and a personal statement that will be incorporated into the online application via written responses to three questions.

You may wish to prepare these documents and consider your personal statement response in advance. The online application can be saved and resumed at a later time, however it must be completed and submitted by the due date.

Applications will be assessed against, and awarded based on, the following criteria -
  1. academic ability as demonstrated by previous academic results and awards;
  2. each of the following as demonstrated by written application and performance at interview:
    1. interest in the questions and ideas that have shaped the world;
    2. track-record of contribution to their communities;
    3. creativity and critical thinking skills that challenge and cross boundaries;
    4. ability to contribute effectively to discussion and debate;
    5. the desire and ability on the part of the candidate to empower and better the lives of others and to make a difference in the world;
    6. the qualities of compassion, empathy, and ethical behaviour;
    7. the value of the opportunity provided by the Scholarship to the applicant’s future development; and
  3. overall performance at interview.

Provided that the above criteria are met, preference may be given to applicants who can demonstrate as part of their application that they have experienced disadvantage or are from an underrepresented background in accordance with the University’s Strategic Plan.

The selection committee will interview short-listed applicants.

To apply and be considered for this scholarship, you must:
  • be an Australian citizen or Australian Permanent Resident at time of application; and
  • either will complete year 12 in the year of application or completed year 12 in the preceding year of application; and
  • intend to enrol full-time an Approved Program of Study in the year of the award; and
  • expect to gain admission to an Approved Program of Study in the year of the award on the basis of predicted senior results and any applicable adjustment factors or on the basis of special entry pathways; and
  • have not undertaken any previous tertiary study at Bachelor level or higher, other than studies in special university programs designed for secondary school students; and
  • be available to participate in an interview with the selection committee on a date set by the University.

Other important information:

  • Incomplete applications will not be processed.
  • Remote area means a Remote or Very Remote region of Australia as defined by the Australian Statistical Geography Standard 2016. To check to see if you are in a Remote area a useful web site is the Australian Government Department of Health (access this here). To check your address, select 'Search the map', enter an address, select the Classification of “Australian Statistical Geographic Standard Remoteness Areas", select the year 2016.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be required to participate in a short interview (in person or via telecommunication) in the period 9-10 January 2020 at a time determined by the University. Your application will be forfeited if you are unable to attend an interview (in person or via telecommunication) at your allocated time.
  • Applicants will be notified via email no later than the 31 December 2019 if shortlisted for an interview.
